“Welcome to our home,” I said and welcomed in the therapist. Hakeem wasn’t playing when he said that he was hiring one. He went ahead and had her come to the house to make me feel more comfortable about opening up. It didn’t matter where we were; I wasn’t comfortable opening up to a complete stranger.

“Thank you for having me.” she stepped inside and I showed her to the living room. Hakeem came out the kitchen with some water, juice and snacks.

I didn’t feel the need to go speak to someone about my past relationship. I was done with Johnathan and I moved on. Clearly, because we were meeting in our new home. I sat down and crossed my legs on the couch across from her. Even though this was our home, I still felt like I was in her office or something. Hakeem sat down beside me and placed his arms around my shoulder. He squeezed my shoulder gently and we looked at the therapist who had just finished getting her stuff out the bag.

“Hakeem, it’s nice to meet you. I spoke to you a few weeks ago, but it’s nice to see you’re ready to seek another opinion,” she reached up and they shook hands.

“Thank you for seeing us, Dr. Rushmore,” he smiled.

She wrote down some notes and then looked up at us with a smile. “Alright, tell me how did we get to this place? Why are we here?”

“I’m here because I liv—”

Hakeem nudged me and he spoke first instead of me. “We’ve been together for about a year. When we got together, I can admit we kind of rushed into things. She had just gotten out of an abusive relationship with her ex, and she was pregnant by him. My issue is I feel that she still protects him. Whenever he’s a topic of discussion, she’s defending him like she wasn’t abused by him.”

The therapist nodded her head and wrote down in her little notebook. “Monett, do you feel like you defend your ex-boyfriend?”

“I don’t feel like I do. I can see where Hakeem feels like I do, but I’m not.”

“Paint the picture for me.”

“Excuse me?” I looked at her confused.

“Tell me what your last relationship was like… explain to me what it was like,” she clarified.

I took a deep breath and looked at Hakeem. This was all his damn fault. I didn’t want to be sitting here talking about this with some stranger. “It was great in the beginning. I noticed he had anger issues and he drank a lot, but we were dating and having fun. At first he would punch walls when he was mad or wouldn’t speak to me for a week. When I moved in, it went from walls to my arms and then he started hitting me whenever he was frustrated, angry or drunk. His father is an alcoholic so—”

“You just did it,” she sat up and smiled looking me right in my eye.

“What?” I looked at her weird ass, confused.
